The story of young Stellina who leaves her family home and sets off on a long journey. One day, the girl meets a king who takes her to a deserted palace. Stellina senses a secret in him. The palace turns out to be a prison. The girl learns that the King of Beasts is a dangerous and cruel ruler: he traps people and animals in a hidden chamber and then brutally punishes them.
Will the heroine find the strength in herself to get out of this trap? On her way, Stellina meets three characters: Monkey, Snake and Bitch. Each of them has a different power and helps her discover these unusual abilities within herself. The heroine balances between the human and animal worlds, which are not divided by any hierarchy, and which together create a magical reality full of spells and surprises. Stellina faces the King of Beasts. Three heroes help her in this fight. Will the King of Beasts be defeated? Will the story of Stellina and the King of Beasts have a happy ending?
"The King of Beasts" is a performance intended for young audiences, aged 12 and over. The literary basis is "Italian Folktales" by Italo Calvino (including "The King of Beasts", "The Snake", "The Three Dogs", and "The Parrot"). The outstanding writer collected folk tales and legends from various Italian regions and retold them. Many of them combine human and animal perspectives. Animal masks are metaphors for certain behaviors, values and talents that create separate worlds. However, they are not always only beautiful and symbolic. Calvino's stories do not always have a happy ending, but each of them has a deep emotional and philosophical layer.
