Fredro describes the culture of nobles based on a small manor house in the borderlines as a hotbed of lies, hypocrisy, and envy. Under the surface of scathing criticism, there is an alternative story about the purity of aristocratic blood, which is the foundation of true Polishness. Is the nation, which Fredro seems to dream about, in fact equivalent to a common language and culture which should be measured up by the citizens? Or is it rather a community of blood which cannot be accessed by everyone, but it can be contaminated by anyone?
