“I’m an advocate of theatre that gets in the way”, wrote Zygmunt Hübner, the patron of Powszechny Theatre, and specified: “Theatre that sticks it’s nose into politics, social life and the most intimate human affairs. Theatre that has its own opinion in these matters, expresses it openly and tries to defend it – on stage, of course.”

We want those words to be more than a slogan or theatrical curiosity. We want them to become a living idea, defining the space of artistic and educational activities planned in Powszechny Theatre. In our actions we want to invoke the best traditions of this place, and through various theatrical forms, using modern pieces and those which creatively reinterpret the classics, we want to discuss burning issues with the audience. To discuss, so not easily accept the views, but debate them. To argue, sometimes also provoke and bring out issues that were pushed back to the margins of public debate.

That is why our planned premieres will be combined into wider thematic sections, creating an opportunity for discussion and cooperation with specialists from various fields, with other institutions, and most of all – with audience. Apart from the premieres, which of course are the main element of every theatre, we want Powszechny Theatre to be a place open for diverse educational activities, workshops, debate series, lectures, concerts, exhibitions and public initiatives. We want it to be a place open for all.
